Dear Patients, Much has been written in the news about the importance of Vitamin D. Because we are no-longer an agrarian society (spending ten hours a day outdoors), and because many of us need to use sunscreen, there is a legitimate concern about vitamin D deficiency. If you are rarely outdoors, you may wish to ask your internist if they could check your vitamin D levels. Bone density studies of 100 year old skeletal remains show a vast difference in bone density as compared with contemporary skeletal surveys. For this reason, the Harvard School of Nutrition is recommending that one ingest the following in supplement form daily: Vitamin D3 (400 IU), Calcium citrate (1000 mg), Magnesium (400mg). Always check with your primary care physcian before starting any supplement as they may interfere with some medications and may be contraindicated in rare medical conditions.
